At this time of year you should not have brown patches. If you have a dog, this is number one suspect. But in May the most likely cause (if you have a lot of brown patches) is grubs in the soil. I would try some watered in bug killer available from Lawns in Spain. If this is the case not treating could result in loosing your entire lawn.

Weed Killer Instructions

Having read the instructions for the pre emergent weed killer, it says to 'water on the lawn to just wet the surface' Does that mean a very light sprinkle, so that when you apply the pre emergent, it soaks down to soil level easily? Also, I was going to apply some now as I am pulling all the crabgrass and poa annua by hand to stop anymore growing. Is that ok?

Firstly please see: http://www.lawnsinspain.com/lawn_calendar.htm
The idea of pre -emergent weed killer is to apply to established lawns, enough to wet the soil and "water in" so you help disperse the chemical into the top few inches of soil (i.e. Where the weed seeds are) This chemical sits in the soil for several months, so have no intention of sowing any grass seed on it cause it will not grow. Applying pre-emergence is risky and can have unexpected results on new lawns. As for pulling up the crabgrass - leave it until you see new seed heads developing. Its larger and easier to handle, and remember you can pull up almost anything if the soil is wet. As for the POA it seeds so quickly you have to be quick. Also remember that POA is now (May) starting to die.

On the contrary John, this is the best time to sow seed in Southern Spain. Unfortunately its the most difficult time to keep it damp. Warm season (Drought Resistant) grass will not germinate until the temperature we have in May. Cool season grasses will germinate ate any time of year, but a little slower in the Winter. The best time to sow Warm season grass seed is late April/March, the best time for Cool season Grass seed is Spring or Autumn (is best). See also lawns in spain website "seeding a lawn" also follow the "Times of the year" link to the "Lawn Calendar"
